When founder Max Gochman and his business partner opened the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, Texas in 1938, it would be safe to say they absolutely could never have predicted what the company would eventually become.
By 1939, they had added military surplus items to their product line and in 1945 officially changed the name to Academy Super Surplus. They would later expand to four stores.
In the early seventies, Max's son Arthur became more involved with the business and by 1978, he quit his law practice to devote his full time and attention to growing Academy.
In 1980, the company introduced sports and outdoor items including fishing, camping, and sporting goods to its product assortment. In 1995, after dropping military surplus from their offerings, the company name was officially changed to Academy Sports+Outdoors. Five years later they would open their 50th store and sales would reach $1 billion.
The company continued along on a healthy growth plan, expanding even further from their home state of Texas as they continued to push their goal to make it easier for everyone to enjoy more sports and outdoors.
In 2010, Arthur Glochman passed away, his father Max had preceded him in death in 1985. In 2011 the family, led by Arthur's son David made the decision to sell the company to KKR, a leading global investment firm. The family kept a minority stake in the business.
Today, Academy Sports + Outdoors operates more than 250 stores in 16 states with more than 23,000 team members throughout the South, Southeast, and Midwest. Sales are now approaching $6 billion annually.
It all started with a tire store, and over thirty years later, an attorney, the founder's son, would give up his practice to pursue something he saw. He would lead the company in a different direction offering sporting goods and outdoor equipment ...a move that pushed Academy Sports+Outdoors into one of the largest outdoor and lifestyle retail chains in the country!
We were honored to work with ELS Construction on the recent remodel of the Academy Sports+Outdoors at Hamilton Place in Chattanooga. Thanks so much to everyone involved in the project!
