What’s the catch? Epoxy and the sun don’t get along. UV light can make it lose color or look chalky over time. It’s also less bendy than urethane. Because of this, we say use epoxy inside, in spots with regulated temperatures and heavy stuff sitting on it, like manufacturing lines and storage platforms.
Urethane Coatings (Polyurethane)
Urethane is more flexible than epoxy, meaning it can handle impacts and sudden temperature swings without cracking. If your building sees big temperature shifts, urethane manages it better. It’s also basically unbeatable when it comes to scratch and rubbing resistance.
Crucially, urethane doesn’t get messed up by UV light, making it the perfect finish for areas near big windows or outside traffic coating zones.
Since it’s more specialized and thinner, urethane can cost a bit more, and it’s touchy during installation (needs careful humidity and temperature control). Use urethane as the top layer in high-rubbing areas, spots with temperature changes, and where sunlight is a factor.
Matching the Coating to the Zone
- Main Storage/Traffic Aisles: You need strength and scratch defense here. Go with an Epoxy base coat for sheer strength, covered with a Urethane coat for rubbing and scuff resistance.
- Manufacturing/Chemical Processing Area: If you handle serious chemicals, high-solids Epoxy or specialized Novolac Epoxy is the correct answer. A urethane topcoat is still often suggested just for easier cleaning.
- Exterior Docks/Receiving Areas: Since these spots deal with sun, rain, and constant movement, a Traffic Coating system (usually polyurethane-based) is required.
To make sure both coatings last a long time, don’t forget the prep work! Meticulous sandblasting and ecoblasting are essential to give the floor the grip it needs.
